The idea of gaining a whole load of information on your website users and their behaviour is very appealing. But a lot of people become intimidated when faced with the Google Analytics dashboard. The sheer amount of data available is daunting, and the different options raise more questions than answers. My advice at the beginning is to keep it super simple until you become more confident using the interface (before you know it you’ll be creating goals and funnels, and custom reporting with your eyes closed).

Here are the top 3 questions you’ll want Google Analytics to answer for you:

In the past, web developers were able to boost their ranking with the search engines by stuffing their pages with keywords, and creating hundreds of pages of low quality content.

In 2011 Google changed their algorithm when it launched its Panda update. This had a huge impact on search engine rankings, with 12% of searches affected by the change. Website owners were in uproar: many previously high ranking sites disappeared behind the front page.

It’s obvious to anyone who owns a tablet PC that many website owners are not testing their pages on the device. Some sites offer limited product visibility and menus that tablet PC users cannot take advantage of.

Tablet PCs and the iPad have primarily been used for entertainment purposes but more and more people are now using them for online shopping*. Website compatibility with a tablet PC is now a valuable investment.

There are many great reasons to get a business blog and with the easily available blogging software out in the marketplace there’s really no excuse not to.

A blog transforms your website from a static online brochure to a vibrant and fascinating hub for your marketplace. A well-written blog engages your customers and keeps them on your website for longer, it brings more quality visitors as well as increasing your search engine ranking.

Sorry to single you guys out, as I’m sure you’re working to a tight budget like the rest of us, but I really felt the need to highlight the terrible usability experience I came across recently on the Hertfordshire Business Expo website. This site commits all the greatest crimes of usability, from unhelpful error messages, forcing users to register for no apparent reason and a baffling information architecture.

Jakob Neilsen* published some research recently to show that users spend less than 10 seconds on a webpage before deciding whether to stay or to go. And if they stay more than 30 seconds you’ve got a good chance of getting them to stay even longer, maybe even 2 minutes or more.

So, to stop your customers going elsewhere your website has got to be engaging, convincing, persuasive and authoritative…at a glance. It’s also got to be user friendly.
